The International 2017: Day 1 Round Up

8 August 2017 12:33

The biggest eSports tournament in the world got off to a flying start with two UB Quarter final match ups and four LB matches on Monday 7th August.

Team Liquid vs Invictus Gaming

Team Liquid kicked off the week-long tournament against Invictus Gaming in the first of the UB quarter-finals. Both these teams were direct invites to the tournament, so top quality action was expected. Team Liquid were 5/1 to win the tournament overall, whilst Invictus were 20/1.

Invictus Gaming, playing as Team Radiant, ran away with Game One in just half an hour to kick of proceedings. ‘OP’ and ‘BurNIng’, playing as Alchemist and Lycan for Invictus absolutely cleaned up, posting 10/0/9 and 10/1/15 KDA respectively and taking home game high Gold, Gold/min and XP/min. Swapping teams obviously did the job for Team Liquid after they bounced back to take the second match in 40 minutes, with ‘Miracle-‘ and ‘MATUMBAMAN’ leading the way with 2440 and 2140 Gold respectively. MATUMBAMAN posted game high kills of 13 playing as Ursa, three more than the next highest player.

Coming down to a last-match-wins-all, Invictus stayed as Team Dire and managed to pull out a strong win in another 40-minute match up. ‘Op’ built of his stellar first game performance to post a KDA of 12/3/16 and take 3123 Gold with him, along with a game high 737 XP/min, but it was his team mate ‘BurNIng’ who took the spoils of a 8/2/19 KDA and a staggering 4663 Gold. Team Liquid will now have to fight their way through the chaotic LB if they stand any chance of reaching the grand final.

Newbee vs Evil Geniuses

The next set of matches put Newbee against Evil Geniuses. Evil Geniuses came in as joint favourites before the tournament started at 7/2 at Bet365, whilst Newbee were joint third at 10/1. In a surprise twist, Newbee swept the round 2-0 with two dominating performances from ‘Sccc’ and ‘Moogy’. The first match lasted just 37 minutes, with Sccc scoring a game high 4552 Gold on just 5/2/8 KDA but bringing in 356 last hits and a staggering 29 denies. The second game was much closer, lasting over 50 minutes, but Moogy showed his class in the Carry role, taking 5100 Gold and 498 last hits to go along with 21 denies to take Newbee through to the next round, where they will face Invictus gaming. Evil Geniuses will need to gather their thoughts before they face Team Empire in the LB or the joint favourites could be walking home early.

LB Round 1

The LB round 1 had four quickfire, winner-progresses matches to round out the day. Team Secret, OG Dota 2 and iG.Vitality all took their expected wins to make it through to the next round. Cloud 9 vs Team Empire turned into a slog fest, lasting over an hour, with Team Empire taking the spoils. ‘Resolut1on’ put on an absolute clinic with Faceless Void, posting 11/0/18 KDA and 8129 Gold, almost double the next highest player.

In the next round the two UB winners will face each other, whilst Team Liquid take on Team Secret and Evil Geniuses will look to get themselves back on track against Team Empire. On Tuesday 8th August we will see LGD.Forever Young take on TNC Pro Team and LGD-Gaming play Virtus.Pro in the UB quarter finals, whilst the LB round 2 match-ups wait for the losers before they can proceed.
