Dota 2 StarLadder i-League Invitational 2 Preview

16 May 2017 16:37

The Dota 2 StarLadder i-League Invitational 2 takes place this weekend in Shanghai, China, with eight teams vying for the $100,000 prize pool.

Sponsored by Republic of Gamers and Twitch, the four-day event runs from Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st May and will see some of the best Dota 2 teams in the world battle it out. At last year’s tournament in Kiev, Vici Gaming Reborn beat Natus 3-1 in the grand final. With neither of these full teams back for 2017, the competition is wide open.

Who’s Participating?

The group stages will see eight teams split into two groups of four, facing each other in best-of-three matches. Invictus Gaming, TNC, VGJ and Alliance make up Group A, with Liquid, Faceless, Newbee and Vega Squadron forming Group B. Six of the competing teams received direct invitations to the event, with Invictus Gaming and Vega Squadron coming through qualifying stages.

Which Teams are in Form?

Most teams come into this tournament in good form, including Newbee. Xu ‘Moogy’ Han was part of the Newbee team who beat LGD Gaming 3-1 in the Dota 2 Professional League Season 3 last month, and he’ll be one of the players to keep an eye on as this tournament unfolds.

Elsewhere, Team Liquid may have finished a disappointing 5th place in April’s Kiev Major 2017, but they won their two previous tournaments before that – the StarLadder i-League StarSeries Season 3 in February and DreamLeague Season 6 towards the back end of last year.

Swedish-born Jonathan ‘Loda’ Berg has been part of Alliance’s playing roster since 2013 and the 29-year-old is now team captain and won awards for Best Carry and Best Team at the joinDOTA Awards 2013. He’ll be looking to lead his team to their first tournament win of the year after a third place finish in January’s World Electronic Sports Games 2016.

The Tournament Schedule

The opening day’s play this weekend sees Invictus Gaming play TNC, and VGJ face off against Alliance, with those two winners then meeting in the Group A Winners Final. On 19 May, Liquid and Faceless will do battle, and Newbee will take on Vega Squadron to determine who progresses to the Group B Winners Final.

The top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals on Day 3, and single-elimination bracket play-offs. The semi-finals see the Group B winner play the second-placed team in Group A, with the Group A winner playing the second-placed team in Group B. There are also Group A and B losers’ matches, and the final day of the four-day event sees the two semi-final winners face off in a best-of-five Grand Final and the chance to win the Championship title and $45,000.
