CS:GO ESL One New York 2018 Preview

21 September 2018 12:04

Some of the finest CS:GO players on the planet are all set to do battle at ESL New York 2018, with eight teams competing for a $250,000 prize pool, an Intel Grand Slam win and the prestigious ESL One title. The two-day event gets underway on Saturday 29th September at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in New York, so find out here who you should back to go all the way to the show-stopping grand final.

Format For Competing Sides

The action begins with two double elimination, best-of-three groups, which sees all teams seeded based on ESL world rankings to ensure a level playing field. Natus Vincere kick off proceedings against Gambit Esports in Group A, followed by Fnatic’s tussle with mousesports.

Faze Clan then go head-to-head with G2 Esports in Group B, with all eyes switching to NRG Esports and Team Liquid as the group stages come to an end. The top two CS:GO sides from each group then progress through to the best-of-three semi-finals, held in front of a live audience, before the best-of-five grand final the following day.

The competing teams are shown below:

Group A

  • Natus Vincere
  • Fnatic
  • mousesports
  • Gambit

Group B – 4/7

  • Team Liquid
  • FaZe Clan
  • G2 Esports
  • NRG Esports

*Team Liquid have replaced Cloud9 in Group B. Cloud9 received a direct invitation on 27th March to compete in New York, accepted the offer four days later, but then withdrew to travel to Turkey to participate in BPS Istanbul 2018. Cloud9 will face a prize money deduction at their next ESL One event due to withdrawing after initially accepting their position.

One Winner From Eight Teams

Six of the eight teams received direct invitations to New York, with Gambit Esports progressing from their European qualification section and NRG Esports making it through from the North American qualifiers. Gambit Esports prevailed 3-2 in their European grand final against North, whilst NRG Esports secured a convincing 3-0 rout of compLexity in their corresponding North American final.

Natus Vincere, the reigning ESL One Cologne champions, look threatening from Group A. The Ukrainian-based outfit went all the way at ESL One New York 2016, and are currently 4th in the ESL world rankings. They were recent runners-up at DreamHack Masters Marseille, and also held the StarSeries & i-League CS:GO Season 5 trophy aloft. Their five-man team of ‘Edward’, ‘flamie’, ‘s1mple’, ‘Zeus’ and ‘electronic’ are one of the favourites to reach the business end of proceedings before the action has even began and, whilst they’ll be under pressure to produce from their own fans, they’ll expect to be there or thereabouts come 30th September.

FaZe Clan, meanwhile, triumphed in this event in 2017, and will be eager to defend their title one year on. Currently ranked as the best team in the world in the ESL rankings, their five-man squad of ‘karrigan’, ‘Xizt’, ‘GuardiaN’, ‘NiKo’ and ‘Rain’ looks settled, balanced and experienced. The quintet are coming into Brooklyn off the back of some eye-catching form, so if they can repeat the performances they showed on their way to landing the ESL One: Belo Horizonte 2018 and Intel Extreme Masters XIII – Sydney titles, they could take some stopping in The Empire State.
