Overwatch Betting

A team-based first-person shooter developed by Blizzard Entertainment, Overwatch has been part of the eSports calendar since 2016, and already boasts a reported 25 million players worldwide. There are several diverse heroes for eSports gamers to choose from, including Zarya, Reinhardt, Bastion and Pharah, all of whom offer a unique set of skills.

Overwatch doesn'’t yet have the reputation of League of Legends, CS:GO or Dota 2 within eSports, but the fact it was named ‘New eSports Game of the Year’ at the eSports Industry Awards 2016 shows its stock is already on the rise and overall prize money has already passed $2,000,000.

As Overwatch hasn'’t been on the eSports scene for long, there aren’t a lot of betting markets out there for fans. The irregularity of major Overwatch tournaments makes the opportunity for betting relatively small, and sadly many bookmakers know this. Only Betway offers regular tournament markets for betting on, although this is bound to increase.

Last year’s Overwatch Atlantic Showdown, hosted by ESL in August 2016, had a total prize pool of $300,000. This was followed by the inaugural Overwatch World Cup in November 2016, organised by Blizzard at the BlizzCon event, where South Korea was crowned world champions and Gong “Miro” Jin-hyuk named tournament MVP.

The two main Overwatch tournaments are the Overwatch League and Overwatch World Cup. The Overwatch League consists of twelve weeks of competitive play amongst teams, with live events and tournaments, concluding with the Overwatch League World Championships. Squads are assembled in pre-season, with teams recruiting the best players from the global talent pool for their roster for the upcoming season. This then leads onto the in-season action, resulting in one team being crowned Overwatch League world champions.

The 2017 Overwatch World Cup sees players handpicked by their countries, who assemble the strongest playing personnel possible for this showpiece 32-nation tournament. Taking place at BlizzCon 2017 in California in November, the winning nation will be decided by a round of eight single-elimination matches.
